Three Days in Maarssen: A Practical Base for Seeing Utrecht
Three Days in Maarssen: A Practical Base for Seeing Utrecht
Maarssen pairs a historic riverfront with quick trains to Utrecht Centraal and is often cheaper than staying in the city itself.
Why base yourself in Maarssen
The town itself is small and walkable along the Vecht. The historic centre clusters around the Vecht and the Bruggestraat, with 17th- and 18th-century merchant houses and the Slot Zuylen estate just north of the centre — the castle opens to visitors from spring through autumn. The Amsterdam–Rijnkanaal cuts through the newer western districts, where you will find the bulk of the chain hotels and free parking. You would not spend all three days in Maarssen; you would spend them in Utrecht and come back to a quieter, cheaper bed.
Day one: into Utrecht
Skip the guided canal boat from the Oudegracht if you are only in town for three days — it eats 75 minutes for a view you get from the wharf itself. Instead, walk to the Museumkwartier and the Dick Bruna Huis on Agnietenstraat, which is smaller and more specific to Utrecht. Lunch around the Ledig Erf or the Twijnstraat, where the streets are quieter than the Oudegracht. If you are travelling with children, the Nijntje Museum (same building as Dick Bruna Huis) is a better bet than the tower climb.
Day two: castles and the Vecht
In the afternoon, take the train two stops to Utrecht Zuilen and visit the Molen Rijn en Zon, a working windmill on the Vecht, then continue into the city for the Rietveld Schröder House, a UNESCO-listed 1924 house on Prins Hendriklaan. Book the Rietveld house in advance: entry is by timed tour and it sells out in summer. If castles are not your thing, swap Slot Zuylen for a walk along the Amsterdam–Rijnkanaal to the Máximapark, which is on the Utrecht side of the canal and has a café and playground.
Day three: pick your comparison
My pick: book two nights in Maarssen and one in central Utrecht if you want both — the move is easy on the Sprinter. If you would rather not switch hotels, stay all three nights in Maarssen and accept the 8-minute train. Skip the temptation to stay in Amsterdam and commute: the train from Amsterdam Centraal to Utrecht Centraal is about 30 minutes, but onward to Maarssen adds another 10 and you lose the evening. Book Maarssen accommodation directly for parking and breakfast, which are the two things chain hotels here do well.
Before you book
The questions people ask about Utrecht, answered with this month’s numbers.
Take the Sprinter from Maarssen station to Utrecht Centraal; the journey is about 8 minutes and runs several times an hour. Utrecht Terwijde, on the western side of Maarssen, also has trains to Utrecht Centraal, taking around 10 minutes.
Yes, if you have a car or do not mind a short train ride. Hotels in Maarssen and Nieuwegein are generally cheaper than central Utrecht hotels and more likely to include parking, while the train to Utrecht Centraal takes under 10 minutes.
Slot Zuylen, a castle and estate on the Vecht, is the main sight and opens seasonally. The historic centre along the Vecht and Bruggestraat is pleasant for a walk, and the Vecht river road is good for cycling north toward Breukelen.
